Gary "Cash" Dwayne Ellis, Sr, age 70, formerly of Orange, Texas, passed away on February 11, 2022, at the Contra Costa Hospital in Martinez, California.

Cremation was held in Martinez, California.

A small gathering will be at Claiborne West Park in Orange, Texas on May 21, 2022 at 1pm to celebrate the life and legacy of Gary.

Gary was born in Houston, Texas, on August 13, 1951, then raised in West Orange since a young boy. He was the 3rd child and youngest son to Charles and Juanita Ellis.

He was a 1969 graduate of West Orange High School, then attended Pipefitters Union 195 Apprentice school becoming a pipefitter/welder by trade. After working out of Union 195 for many years, he moved west working out of a few Unions in Washington state and California. There are many stories that exist as to how Gary received the nickname "Cash", with many of them coming back to the idea that he did not prefer to use credit and banks, so he could always be relied on to have cash on him.

Even though Gary had moved away, his family looked forward to his visits because they knew he would bring the party with him when he arrived. Gary was known for pulling pranks on his family and friends, leaving them laughing so much their sides would be hurting the next day. He was a jokester from the beginning. Once after being sent to the principal's office for the nth time that year, Mr. Taylor asked him why he was such a cut up. In typical Gary fashion, he replied "Because my name spells "Sille" backwards", which it in fact does. Many hilarious stories from his pipefitting years and his family exist, with Gary living up to the Ellis name spelled backwards.

Gary was always a kid at heart who loves games and sports. He would play foosball with his sons after school and loved a good round of horseshoes and video games. He loved playing NHL on PlayStation so much that he was once ranked in the top 10 all-time players for the PlayStation NHL Hockey game. Gary also enjoyed teaching and coaching his boys in Little League. To say he was a Dallas Cowboys fan would be an understatement, and he passed this fandom on to his sons. He was known to have collected enough sports playing cards to open his own shop.

Some of the other loves of Gary's life included his passion for food, including BBQ, buttered popcorn, Bluebell ice cream and his mama's Gumbo. He had a love for vintage and muscle cars, purchasing them so he could work to restore them for show. He once owned a 1946 Packard and a 1956 Jeep Willys. He had at least five or so project cars he was currently working on at any given time. Gary was also a bit of a MacGyver, crafting and creating all sorts of things from miscellaneous items. He fell in love with the Northwest area enjoying camping, hiking and being adventurous with his family; however, his goal was to return home to Orange, Texas and retire near his family.

Gary loved being "MePaw", spending time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren. They all loved hanging around MePaw because again, he was a true kid at heart and knew how to keep them entertained.

Gary is preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Juanita Ellis, his daughter, Wendy Fernandez, niece, Crystal Strohmaier and nephew, Dustin Brack.

He is survived by his loving wife of 14-years, Diann Ellis, his sons, Gary "Toby" Dwayne Ellis Jr., Jared Ellis and husband Chris Arboleda and Matthew "Kelso" Ellis and wife Alli Ellis grandchildren, Sophia Ellis, Bella Ellis, Sean Ellis, Cherise Fernandez, Corey Fernandez, Kayley Aispuro and Carlos Aispuro Jr, great-grandchildren, Alexia Fernandez, Chloe Fernandez, Jazella Gutierrez, Judah Gutierrez, Nehemiah Gutierrez, Keanu Fernandez and Kayden Fernandez, siblings, Chuck Ellis and wife, Maridee Ellis, Donna Ellis-Cotten and husband, Charlie Cotten and Darla Brack and husband, Dan Brack and stepchildren, Tara Cole and Brian Grenier.
