Nana, as she was affectionately known to everyone, grew up on the family farm outside of Fargo. In her teens, Nana worked at Knerr Dairy in downtown Fargo, a job she enjoyed remembering years later. Looking for a bit of adventure and a chance to see the Pacific Ocean, Nana packed her bags and headed to Oregon with one of her best friends when she was 18. In Oregon, she met Walter Smith, whom she would marry in 1942. Through the war years they traveled throughout the US, eventually relocating to Cleveland, Ohio and finally settling in Sheffield Lake, where they raised their three children and welcomed many grandchildren and friends throughout the years. Throughout her life, Nana enjoyed gardening, reading, politics, listening to Janis Joplin, and long distance calls with her sisters. Nana was the steadfast and poised presence in all our lives, she will forever be deeply missed.
Evelyn leaves to cherish her memory two children, Walter (Dolly) Smith, and Susan (Jack) Bodach; grandchildren Eric (Denise) Smith, Scott (Maria) Smith, Seth (Tracy) Smith, Kim Young, Aaron (Mika) Bodach, and Cory (Katrina) Bodach; 11 great-grandchildren; 4 great-great grandchildren; and one sister Ellen Simmons. She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband Walter Smith; her beloved daughter Candi Lynn Alexander; and three brothers and three sisters.
Funeral services will be held privately. Evelyn will be laid to rest next to her husband in Resthaven Memory Gardens, Avon, Ohio.
