Painter. He was a Portuguese painter. Belonging to the first generation of Portuguese modernist painters, Amadeo de Souza-Cardoso stood out for the exceptional quality of his work and the dialogue he established with the historical vanguards of the early 20th century. He developed, between Paris and Manhufe, the most serious possibility of modern art in Portugal in an intense but little known international dialogue with the artists of his time. His painting articulates in an open way with movements such as cubism, futurism or expressionism, reaching in many moments - and in a sustained way in the production of the last years -, a level in everything comparable to the top production of his international contemporary art. His death at the age of 30, victim of the Spanish Flu, would dictate the abrupt end of a pictorial work in full maturity and of a promising international career, but still in an affirmation phase.
