'Chris' Barrett loved culture of Cincinnati
She raised 'superior' family

HYDE PARK - MayBelle Christine Finn Barrett, the widow of Dr. Charles M. Barrett, died Friday of pneumonia at her home. The lifelong Cincinnati resident was 94.

"Mrs. Barrett was a beautiful, calm, serene, capable woman who raised a wonderful family," said Dr. Harold Kotte of Walnut Hills, medical director for Western & Southern Life Insurance Co. and a friend for 75 years. "I can't say enough about the family. They're all superior people, in no small part due to her competence in managing the family. It's true that behind every successful man stands a successful, wonderful wife. She was it."

Called "Chris" or "Chrissy" by her siblings and many of her friends, Mrs. Barrett was a daughter of MayBelle Voss Finn and John H. Finn. Born and raised in Walnut Hills, she was an alumna of the former Convent of the Sacred Heart Academy in Clifton. She also attended the University of Cincinnati and received a degree from the New York School of Fine Art.

An accomplished pianist, Mrs. Barrett studied under the late Dorothy Stolzenbach Payne, who played with the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra. Mrs. Barrett later received a certificate in piano from Kingsmith School in Washington, D.C.

"The one thing she loved most about Cincinnati was the culture," said her son, C. Francis Barrett of Hyde Park. She loved the Cincinnati Art Museum, the Taft Museum and Music Hall, and was a longtime patron of the CSO, the Summer Opera and the Cincinnati May Festival.

Besides managing a large home and family, Mrs. Barrett was mainly involved in supporting organizations related to her husband's profession and business. Dr. Barrett, for whom the Charles M. Barrett Cancer Center is named, was chief of staff at Mercy Hospital; chairman of the board of trustees of the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine, where he also was a professor of radiation therapy; and president and CEO of Western & Southern Life. "She was very active in supporting all of his endeavors and helped with numerous charitable activities related thereto," her son said.

Dr. Barrett died in 1989.

Mrs. Barrett was a member of the Woman's City Club of Greater Cincinnati and a supporter of the Association of Volunteers for the Convalescent Hospital for Children, a division of Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center. She was also active with the Mercy Hospital Guild.

She was a member of the Cincinnati Country Club and the Queen City Club.

In addition to her son Francis, survivors include two daughters, Angela Eynon and Marian Leibold, both of Hyde Park; three other sons, John Barrett of Indian Hill, current CEO and director of Western & Southern Life, U.S. District Judge Michael R. Barrett of Walnut Hills, and Dr. William Barrett of Mount Lookout; two sisters, Margaret Finn Peters of Indian Hill and Mary Louise Finn Woltering of Madeira; a brother, Thomas Finn of La Jolla, Calif.; and 20 grandchildren.

The funeral is 11 a.m. todayin the chapel at Summit Country Day School, 2161 Grandin Road in Hyde Park. A reception follows. Burial at Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Montgomery will be private.

Memorial gifts are suggested to the Charles M. Barrett Cancer Center, 234 Goodman St., Cincinnati, OH 45267-0757.
