After retirement, Pat and Joe moved to Mashpee, and wintered in Old Naples, Florida, where Joe would play an occasional golf game, walk the early morning beach, enjoy visits with his family, watch his beloved Red Sox, keep up with science and politics, listen to music, and ride his bike.

Joe will be interred in the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne on Cape Cod, in a private ceremony at a later date.
