Douglas "Duncan" Jerry Bartholomew was born January 13, 1950, in Spokane, WA, to parents Kathleen and Gerry Bartholomew.

When he was five years old, the family moved to Seattle, including older sister Linda and younger brother David. It was there that he graduated from Shoreline High School in 1968. He was offered a scholarship to NASA but had other plans.

Doug was an intelligent man and graduated with a bachelor's degree from the prestigious Whitman College in Walla Walla, WA, in 1972. After graduating, he started his master's program at Western Washington University in Bellingham. While working on his master's, he volunteered at the Sun Crisis Center in Bellingham. At the age of 28, he received his Master's Degree at Western Washington University in 1978. Doug then became a mental health specialist in Chehalis, WA., before moving to Edmonds.
In 1980 he welcomed his first son Ian to the world, followed by Nathan in 1985. He then moved to Kirkland. During this time, Doug and a small group of colleagues pioneered Bellevue's first domestic-violence mental-health program at the Mental-Health Center in Bellevue. Out of this work, he became instrumental in forming the domestic violence laws written in WA state, helping women in crisis, and working closely with Child Protective Services.

In 2000 he married Kathy Benardout, who brought her children, daughter Lily and son Gar, into their lives. They lived happily in Bellevue, where Doug could be found either working in the backyard or having a dinner party with friends most weekends. He was an avid reader and loved writing, having published two books. He and Kathy loved traveling to Hawaii with the family whenever they could.

He is survived by his wife Kathy; his son Ian and partner Camella, and their children Lourdes and Ines; son Nathan; daughter Lily; son Gar; sister Linda and husband Dave Thomas; brother David and wife Nancy Bartholomew; and his ex-wife Judith Weden.
