Tom was a graduate of South High School in Denver, Colorado and attended college at the University of Colorado in Boulder to study Architecture. Tom joined the Navy in 1966. Tom was assigned to the Independence and then assigned to the USS Duncan with a tour in Vietnam. He served for 4 years. Tom joined the Denver Police Department in 1970 and was assigned as patrol officer in District 2. Tom continued to work his way up through the ranks of the police department and retired in 1995 as a Lieutenant Commander at Stapleton International. His love for the Denver Police Department was obvious in the way he spoke of the experiences he had while on the job and of the many friends that he had in the department.

Tom enjoyed fishing and tying his own flies. He enjoyed camping and traveling with his family. He loved to water ski and was an avid snow skier. His hobbies included building and flying model airplanes and home renovation projects. He was also a skilled mechanic.

Tom was known for his common sense, fairness, and honesty. Tom was witty and had a sense of humor. Tom loved his country and fellow servicemen and donated to many charitable organizations.

Survivors include his wife, three children, and ten grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by his parents, his son, Robbie Wood and Paul Atencio and grandsons Daniel and Gabriel Schmidt.
