Walter Paul Smith was born on February 21, 1942 to Albert and Katie Marvel (Carter) Smith in Oskaloosa, Iowa. He graduated from New Sharon High School with the class of 1960. After the sudden death of his father in August of 1960, he quickly became a fulltime farmer taking care of his mother and sisters.After 25 years of farming, he joined Vermeer in Pella and worked there for 19 years. Upon retirement, he had audited more than 20,000 hay balers. Walter was a hard worker and loved his family very much. He had a great sense of humor and an immense amount of knowledge across a wide array of subjects. His greatest gift was his ability to work with his hands. He was a master of tools, being able to fix anything or create something new. He was a truly gifted artisan of woodworking, making many family treasures. Above all, he loved and cared for his family immensely and will be missed by all who had the opportunity to know him. Walter was also a longtime member of the New Sharon United Methodist Church.
He will be remembered by his wife, his two sons and their spouse, his seven grandchildren, He is also survived by his two sisters,
