EULOGY for PATRICIA JEAN VEACH at May 14, 2022 funeral luncheon
by her brother Kenneth Evert Holmes
On April 25, 1948 at Republic County Hospital in Belleville, Kansas a bundle of joy was born to Kenneth Dean & Marcella Lucille (Sterba) Holmes. They had named their first two children after themselves so the name selection process would have to take a different path. They chose Patricia Jean and nicknamed her Patty. Her first home would be on a farm about four miles northeast of Byron, Nebraska. Patty quickly bonded to her parents as well as her sister Marcy and brother Kenny. She was a beautiful child and the whole family loved her. I think Patty was born with that dimpled smile on her face, the smile that would become her trademark for life. Her smile lit up her entire face. Even when she was sad or in pain a bit of that smile would peek out.
Patty was like her Mother in so many ways. They had a special Mother/Daughter bond and enjoyed each other's company and wisdom. Both enjoyed music, teaching, learning, sewing, reading, and on and on.
Our Mother taught Patty to play the piano at an early age, a skill she would enjoy all of her life. Patty loved to sing. Most of us know the story about her singing "The Big Fat Turkey" song on the way to Grandma's house on Thanksgiving. And, of course, "She'll Be Cumin Round the Mountain" and "I Love You a Bushel & a Peck". Patty always looked forward to singing from The Golden Book of Songs at North Star rural school. Patty sang in the Byron High School chorus and played the clarinet in band. Her love for music carried through her graduation from Marymount College and on to a 25-year career of teaching and directing music at Solomon High School.
Our Mother could sew about anything. She sewed clothes made from flour sacks for us kids. Patty quickly picked up on sewing. Mom taught her all the tricks to hand sewing, embroidery, and how to run the sewing machine. Patty carried that skill on to her adult life, sewing clothes for her children and sharing her hand sewn creations with family and friends. After retiring from teaching Patty started her own business, "Stitches & More" in Bella Vista. Alterations and computerized embroidery were her specialties for 25 years. A dimpled smile went with each sale. Grandma Sterba called Patty her "Chatty Patty". Patty's gift to gab and her smile were the best advertising a business could have.
Patty placed a high value on Faith, Family, Education, & Hard Work. She was an active member of the Catholic Church all of her life. She was a sister to Marcy, Kenny, Kathryn, Marilyn, Jim, John, and Loretta. She was the wife of Rick and Bob. She was the mother of Tony and Tonya. She was the grandmother of Dakota, AJ, Brady, Olivia, and Andrew. She was aunt to a multitude of nieces and nephews. Love for her family is reflected in the many scrapbooks and photo collages she made. Patty was a good student and enjoyed learning. Her education started with 1st grade at North Star, a one room country school. At 5th grade she went to Byron Grade School and graduated from Byron High School in 1966. She continued her education at Marymount College and received her bachelor's degree. While teaching at Solomon High School she attended Kansas State University and received a Master's degree. Patty wasn't afraid of hard work but also enjoyed relaxing activities including working crossword puzzles, scrapping, playing the piano, reading and golfing with Bob. A "sing along" often went with playing the piano. A Mother/Daughter duet with Tonya was a special treat.
Patty touched each of our lives in a special way. We will miss her. We will always remember her. We will always remember that dimpled smile.
