Bernard F. Vogelaar was born Sept. 4, 1917, in Pella, Iowa, where he spent his childhood.

He graduated from high school in 1935 and from Central College in Pella in 1939 with a B.A. in math and physics. He then graduated from Iowa State University with a B.S. in agricultural engineering in 1940.

In 1941, he married Doris Curry, to whom he was married until her death in 1993. He married Helen Bogard Muyskens Dec. 16, 1994. He and Helen moved from Moline to Bloomington in September 2000.

During World War II, his engineering skills were solicited to work on classified projects for the war effort. In 1951, he started working for John Deere Harvester Works in East Moline, where he worked as a design engineer until his retirement in 1982. He was instrumental in developing the hillside combine, which revolutionized the harvesting of wheat and other grains. During his career, he had a major role in the development of 14 patents related to harvesting equipment. In 1977, he was chosen as one of four outstanding alumni of Central College.

He was devoted to his family. Along with his successful career, he was interested in woodworking, carving, gardening, travel, skiing and church volunteer work.

His Christian faith was central to his outlook on life, and it showed through his self-discipline, his integrity and his generosity. He was an active member of First United Presbyterian Church of Moline for 49 years. In 2000, the educational wing of the church was named the Bernard Vogelaar Education Center in recognition of his significant contribution to the design and construction administration of the addition.
