James R. Spencer, age 53, of Crown Point, IN, passed away on Sunday, April 10, 2022.

James Roderick Spencer was born in Miami, Florida on the 29th day of October. He was a beautiful baby boy. Rod as he is affectionately called was raised by his parents: John and Casandra Yulee.

As a child, he loved to read and spent a great deal of his early years reading. He attended Coconut Grove Elementary School where he tested into the "Gifted Program" in the second grade.

In 1980, he moved with his parents to Live Oak, Florida. Following his granddad's example, he excelled in baseball and played for several years.

During his early years, he accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior and joined the Baptist Church.

High school helped Rod develop new interests. In his 11th grade year, he was voted president of the service organization "Interact Club." This club for young people helped Rod grow and learn to develop leadership skills.

Rod graduated from Suwannee High School in 1986 with high test scores. He applied for admission to the U. S. Naval Academy in Annapolis. As a result of his efforts, he received a four-year scholarship from the Navy to attend Florida A&M University. After a year with the Navy's program and a summer as a midshipman aboard the USS Monongahela, Rod decided to continue his education apart from the Navy.

Rod completed his studies at Florida A&M University "Go Rattlers" and graduated with a bachelor's degree in Economics. Rod has had various careers. He worked as a bus driver for the city of Tallahassee city bus system, worked as a cab driver and even owned a few cabs. After receiving his degree he had several jobs in insurance working for State Farm and Allstate. Rod was always interested in transportation and became intrigued with trains. He then applied for a job with CSX Railroad for a special training program for managers and was accepted. He worked for CSX Railroad in various parts of the country and lived in Fort Wayne, Indiana; Schererville, Indiana; Bear, Delaware ; Byron Center, Michigan; Jacksonville, Florida and finally Crown Point, Indiana.

James was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church. He was passionate about his family, he was also a strong leader who enjoyed his career as a railroad manager with CSX. James enjoyed telling a good joke, golfing, history and traveling. His larger than life personality will always be remembered.

James is survived by his wife of 23 years, Yolanda Spencer; children: James "Jimmy" Spencer II, Meghan Simone Spencer & Heather Spencer; parents: John and Casandra Yulee and James Colzie; in-laws: Walter and Kim Moore, Rosalyn Paul; siblings: Christal J. Brown (Mitch), John W. Yulee (Alexandra), Jonathan P. Yulee (Trenece), Jason N. Yulee (Megan), Jarrett S. Yulee, LaKetha Wilson, Dawna Nelson; sister-in-law: Glenna (Marlon) Denson; nieces and nephews: Mason, Quincy, Shanae, Sienna, Micah, John III, Jackson, Tiana, Jonathan II, J Corbin, Jasiri, Jacob Ryker; godsons: Antonio Davis, Mason Springer; aunts: Nedra Richards, Celia B. Spencer, Joycelyn M. Kelly, Melodie H. Davis-Houston, Cheryl D. Castile, Doretha "Tootie" Lincoln and Jacqueline Yulee; uncles: Joe Richards, Anthony Moore, Great Uncle Russell Spencer, Richard Yulee, Charles Yulee, Ronnie Davis, Willie Castile; and a host of cousins and friends.

Friends may visit with the family on Monday, April 18, 2022 at Geisen Funeral, Cremation & Reception Centre, 606 E. 113th Ave., Crown Point, IN 46307 from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM.

A prayer service will take place at 9:15 AM on Tuesday, April 19, 2022 at the Funeral Home with Funeral Services to follow at 10:00 AM DIRECTLY at St. Mary Catholic Church, 321 E. Joliet St. Crown Point, IN 46307. Fr. Patrick Kalich officiating.
