Eastport- Frederick "Fred" William Hartman Jr., age 88, peacefully passed away in Herington, Kan., on Thursday, March 3, 2022. Fred was born in Buffalo, N.Y. on August 29, 1933, the son of the late Frederick W. and Irene Karl Hartman.

He lived the majority of his life in Eastport with his late wife, Betty J. Hartman.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Jane (Stackhouse) Hartman; his parents, Frederick and Irene Hartman; two brothers, Roland and his wife Mabel; and Elwood and his wife Mickey; four sisters, Betty Sikorski and husband Frank, Ruth Schreier and husband George, Marilyn Zaborowski and husband Lenny and Annette Riedel and husband Wayne; and a son-in-law, Alvah Bernie Seeley.

He is survived by his seven daughters, Jane Seeley, Georgina Bryant and husband Daniel, Crystal Johnson and husband Ronald, Wendy Roussel and husband Rejean, Francine Hackett and husband Wendell, Tabetha Young and husband Marc and Rosalind James and husband Brian; 14 grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; several great-great-grandchildren; along with a close niece, Jill Schreier and husband Tom; several other nieces, nephews, cousins; and many friends, including two special friends, Buck and Jane Suddy.

Fred attended the Buffalo school in New York. On January 16, 1952, he enlisted in the United States Navy and served on the USS Mount Olympus AGC-8 ship with a rank of 1FS until he was discharged on December 14, 1955.

On December 31, 1955, Fred was united in marriage to Betty Jane Stackhouse in Eastport.

Fred worked at B.H. Wilson sardine factory before taking a position with George Harris' boat shop, where he worked for many years. He later worked at the Guilford mill until the mill shut down. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus.

Fred enjoyed making wooden things with his hands, such as clocks, dollhouses, model boats and cars, furniture and doing leather craft projects. He also enjoyed doing word search puzzles, watching the Buffalo Bills and wrestling on TV and playing with the family dog, Buddy.

A memorial service for Fred and Betty will be held on Thursday, May 19, 2022, at 10 a.m. at the Hillside Cemetery in Eastport, where family and friends can gather to celebrate their lives.
