The 13th and last child of John Michael and Elizabeth (Naffziger)Kistler. He was married to Margaret "Maggie" J. Coiner on December 24, 1878 in Golden City, MO. Six children were born of this union: Mrs. Jennie K. Davis, Fletcher Clarence Kistler, Peter Ross Kistler, Horace Lester Kistler, Irshal I. Kistler, and Ivor Nelson Kistler. His wife passed away on July 16, 1918, and he married Alta Chloe (Ralson) Mangold on December 31, 1919 at Fort Scott, KS.

John August was a prominent farmer in the Petersburg area, where he lived for 38 years. He was a member of the Mt. Olive Presbyterian Church where his funeral was held February 5, 1936.
