Son of John Edward Clark (governor of Texas) and Martha Melissa Evans Clark. He was a bookkeeper.

"The 1860 and 1900 U.S. Federal Censuses and his death certificate all comport with a 30 January 1852 birth date. 1853 is impossible because his younger brother William E. Alfred Clark was born 12 July 1853."
