Joseph E. DeWees, 84, of Charleston, WV, formerly of Holden Beach, NC passed away on Friday, February 26, 2021 at Hubbard Hospice House after a long illness.
Born in Dunbar, WV on October 16, 1936, Joe was the son of the late Carrie E. and Virgil A. DeWees, Sr. He was also preceded in death by his siblings, Margaret Garnes, Betty Derrick, Louise Guthrie, Phyllis Thaxton, Dorothy Campbell, and Virgil A. "Bud" DeWees, Jr.
Joe graduated from Dunbar High School and was a graduate of WV Institute of Technology with a Chemical Engineering degree. After graduation from WV Tech he worked for the US Government, Department of the Navy and Department of Energy. After retiring, Joe moved to Holden Beach, NC and made many friends at the beach. He was a former member of the Holden Beach Turtle Patrol and until he became physically unable, he was an active member of the Holden Beach Chapel.
He is survived by his brother Richard Gary DeWees and his wife Helgard of Prince George, VA and Holden Beach, NC. Joe also leaves behind to cherish his memory his beloved nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Honoring his wishes he will be cremated and a memorial celebration of his life will be held at a later date at the Holden Beach Chapel.
The family is so grateful to Deana Samms and husband David for being Joe's loving caregivers when he came home to West Virginia. Thank you to the nurses and staff at Hubbard Hospice House for their kind and compassionate care for Joe.
