Catherine (Katherine) Rose Smith, age 99 of Boone, passed away on Wednesday, April 20, 2022 at the Eastern Star Masonic Home.

Rose was born on January 15, 1923 in Harrison Township, Boone County, Iowa, the daughter of William M. and Christine (Weigel) Smith. She lived in Boone County all of her life.

She attended country school (the Sturtz School) for four years. She then attended Sacred Heart School in Boone for grades 5 through 12. After graduation in 1940, Rose spent the next five years helping out on the farm and then nine years helping her dad in the store and locker at Mackey. From 1954 to 1956 she attended Boone Junior College (now DMACC). After graduating from junior college, she continued her education in summer sessions at Iowa State Teachers College (now UNI) in Cedar Falls. Starting in the fall of 1956, Rose taught in the Boone Schools, usually 2nd grade or a combination class of 1st and 2nd graders.

Rose was a member of the Sacred Heart Church and Sacred Heart Altar Society, 45-year member of the Delta Kappa Gamma Society, charter member of the Boone Railroad Historical Society and a member of the Boone Area Humane Society. She also had a lifetime membership in the in the ISEA, UNI Alumi Association, DMACC Alumni Association and the Boone County Historical Society. Her hobbies were reading, traveling, music, gardening, pencil collecting and sewing.

She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Frank Smith and W. Albert Smith; sister, Margaret A. Smith; nephew, Roger Smith; great niece, Laura Wuebker; and her very good friend, Doris Wisecup.

She is survived by her sister-in-law, Mary M. Smith; nephew, John F. Smith (Julie Campbell); nieces, Mary (Mike) Walsh, Donna (Tom) Johnson and Janet (Wayne) Wuebker; and several great and great-great nephews and nieces.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Saturday, April 23, 2022 at the Church of the Sacred Heart in Boone. Visitation will be held one hour prior to Mass. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be directed to Sacred Heart School Endowment Fund.
