James was born on July 23, 1938, in Dallas, Texas, the only son to the late Frank Price and the late Celestine Robinson. James, known to family as "Muggy" and to friends as "Bo", spent most of his life in Dallas. He graduated from Lincoln High School in 1956. Following high school, he served in the United States Air Force from 1956 to 1959. After his military service, he spent a few years at various jobs before becoming an employee of the United States Postal Service in 1965. He retired from USPS in 1992.
In 1978, James joined Concord Church and was a member for most of the years since that time until his age and health prevented him from attending services regularly. As a Concordian, he served in the Male Chorus and participated in the earliest iteration of the church's bible study gatherings called Growth Groups.
In his younger years, James enjoyed playing baseball with his USPS coworkers and friends at Beckley-Saner Park in Dallas. He liked to play golf and frequently played games at Cedar Crest Golf Course in Dallas. He enjoyed playing dominoes and the card games Spades and Bid Whist. As he got older, he continued to read the daily newspaper and complete crossword and word search puzzles. Throughout his life, he favored jazz, both traditional and contemporary, and rhythm and blues. His favorite musical artists were John Coltrane, Al Green, and Bill Withers. James also loved dressing well – not for fads or trends, but for appropriateness of what was called on for the occasion. He had a strong appreciation for a fresh haircut and shave, crisply pressed shirts, cuffed trousers, and shined shoes, and was rarely without a cotton handkerchief in his pocket.
James is preceded in death by his father Frank, mother Celestine and stepmother Athalene Manoy Price. He leaves to cherish memories of him two daughters, Kelly Hall (John) of DeSoto, Texas, and Lori Price (Winston Bowdre) of Dallas, Texas; two grandsons, Jameson Hall of Washington, D.C., and Jacoby Hall of Dallas, Texas; one granddaughter, Mackenzie Graves (Harley) of Dallas, Texas; a former spouse, Brenda Fagan (Alonzo) of DeSoto, Texas; and a host of truly beloved cousins and relatives from the Price, Robinson and Manoy branches of his extremely large family as well as friends who will miss his kind spirit and gentle nature.
