Ezra was the eighth of nine children born to Simon Shantz andJudith Stauffer. He married Lydia Ann Stauffer on March 15, 1888, in New Hamburg, Ontario. The couple farmed in Wilmot Township near Haysville, Ontario. Their children were:
- Winnifred Emma (1888-1981)
- Susan Marilla (1890-1987)
- Lorne (1892-1893)
- Burton Willard (1894-1947)

At age 36, Ezra died from consumption (tuberculosis), leaving Lydia Ann with four young children.
