Addington Youth Killed Accidentally by Target
On last Sunday night at 9:00 o'clock the whole of Addington was startled by the news that William Nathan Roof had accidentally killed himself with a target rifle.
It is not definitely known just how the accident occurred but from the best that can be ascertained the little boy was playing train with his mother. He had just delivered to her some blank papers telling her that same were tickets and messages and for her to use same as directed. His mother then turned around and before she had time to ascertain what was further being done by the little fellow she heard the report of the rifle, his screams and shrieks for help caused by the great pain from entrance of the bullet into his body.
Evidently the little fellow was investigating to see if the rifle was loaded as the bullet entered the center of his right eye. It is thought that he placed the muzzle of the gun to his eye, attempted to pull back the hammer when same slipped from his hand, causing the explosion of the shell. The bullet did not pass through his head but completely penetrated the brain causing death within a period of three hours. He was never conscious after being shot.
Mr. Roof is an employee of the Rock Island Railroad and was near Anadarko. He was immediately notified of the sad accident and arrived on the 3:15 a.m. train but after his son had died.
The little fellow was in Addington school and was liked exceedingly well by all his little playmates. He was nine years and nine months old.
He was buried in the Addington Cemetery Tuesday evening at 4 o'clock.
Byron Shipp, Fate Fulton, Francis Fulton, Charles McKinney, Arthur Price and Milton Williams served as pall bearers, all being playmates and school associates. Rev. Mann of Terral conducted the funeral ceremonies at the Methodist Church where a great concourse of friends and acquaintances had gathered.
It is indeed a fatal and sad affair and shocked the whole of Addington.

Year of birth is incorrect on the headstone.
