James Edward Pitts, Sr. was born on May 28, 1930, in Bedford, TN to Jessie "Papa" and Katie Vining Pitts "Mama Katie". He was one of seven children: Gladys McGill (deceased); Carlos (Lena Sue) Pitts; Augusta Pitts (deceased); Ruth (Al) Curry; Terrill Pitts, and Carlene Mayes (deceased).

He passed from his earthly life on Saturday, April 16, 2022 at Azalea Assisted Living in Smyrna, TN. James was a devoted Christian. He served as a deacon and an elder at the Tusculum Church of Christ for many years. He was a member of the Woodson Chapel Church of Christ until moving to Azalea Assisted Living center and there he worshipped faithfully with the members of Smyrna Church of Christ.

James served on the board of Fall Creek Falls Summer Bible Camp and also served as a camp counselor for many years while Faye served as the camp cook; and in later years, as a counselor. He also served on the board of Disaster Relief for many years.

James loved life and was quite determined to live to 100. We are sure he has been so successful at his long life because he had such a deep love for his family. He was predeceased by his loving wife, Gleena Faye Covington Pitts. They were married for 67 years at the time of her passing. He was a devoted husband. He said, until he just couldn't talk anymore "that Faye was a beautiful lady and he loved and missed her so much." We just can't imagine their reunion.

James was a devoted father of six children: James E. Pitts Jr. (Jimmy to family, Rooster to the rest of the world) and his wife, Sheryl of Smyrna, TN; Madonna Nave and her husband, Gilbert of Lebanon, TN (and at large); Patrice Collins and her husband, Craig of Murfreesboro, TN; Gina Cameron and her husband, Iain of East Kilbride, Scotland; Rodney Pitts and his wife, Tricia of Cookeville, TN; and Marty Pitts and his wife Suzanne of Lebanon, TN.

He loved them all deeply, advised them wisely; and took great pride in each and every accomplishment. He adored all 16 of his grandchildren: Jesse (Lauren) ; Lawson (Hayley) Pitts; Sonny Nave; Maranda Nave; Leah Nave; Paul Collins, Nicola (Scott) Lewis; and Timothy (Laken) Collins; Kaye, Brittney and Jared (Megan) Cameron; Erin (Josh) Kimberlin; Clint Pitts and Matthew Pitts; and Michael and Abbey Pitts.

James and Faye also are survived by 10 (ALMOST 11) GREAT GRANDCHILDREN: Will O'Neill whose mom is Tracey that James & Faye both adored; Gracie Nave; Luke MacGinlay; Landon, Audrey, Jackson and Charlotte Lewis; Owen and Raelyn Pitts and Baby P….arriving sometime this week! James and Faye fostered many children for Agape over the course of their marriage as well. They had a host of nieces and nephews, as well as many dear friends. James was predeceased and welcomed home by his wife, Faye; granddaughter, Erin, her husband, Josh, and their son, Sawyer Kimberlin. James is best described as a "good man" by many people. His neighbor at Azalea said "I have never known a man who read his Bible as much as James did….he was such a good man." We will miss him, but we will continue to do our best to live by the example he set for all of us that we will share in his welcoming US home eternally.

Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, April 21, 2022, at 2:30 p.m. at Woodbine Funeral Home, Hickory Chapel, 5852 Nolensville Road by Rodney Pitts. Interment Nolensville Cemetery.
