Sergeant First Class Pionk, the son of Duane Gregory and Sandra Joy Nace Pionk, a native of Oliver, Wisconsin. A 1996 graduate of Superior Wisconsin High School, Matthew was a "wonderful humanitarian", often helping the downtrodden and those in need. Growing up he was often seen in a garage, working on cars and had restored a 1970's Chevy pick-up truck. He enjoyed being outdoors, hunting, fishing and snowmobiling. He married his wife on March 20, 1998 and joined the Army the next month. He was on his second tour of duty in Iraq and had been awarded a Bronze Star during his first tour for helping an injured soldier. Matthew was assigned to the 3rd Squadron, 2nd Stryker Cavalry Regiment, 1st Armored Division out of Vilseck, Germany, and was one of six soldiers killed when they entered a house that was booby-trapped with bombs. Matthew is survived by his parents; his wife; their three children; two brothers: Jeremy and Joshua (Amy) Pionk; one sister, Katie Pionk; maternal grandparents, Paul and Joyce Nace; aunts and uncles, and numerous other firends and relatives. He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Ignatz and Esther Pionk. Matthew was the nephew of Richard C. Pionk. Bio by: Sue
