Sgt. Christopher Sanders of Roswell, New Mexico was a graduate of New Mexico Military Institute. He joined the Army in February 2004 after briefly attending Eastern New Mexico University in Roswell. Joining the military was a lifetime goal for Chris, and the urgency to serve his country intensified after the 9/11 bombing so continuing in college was no longer an option. He served his first tour in Iraq in Mosul from October 2004 through September 2005 and was present at the Mosul tent bombing. He received numerous commendations and medals including the Combat Infantry Badge, Expert Infantry Badge, and Commendation Medal for service in Operation Iraqi Freedom. He returned for his second tour in August 2007 to Baghdad and was scheduled to return to Germany in November 2008. Christopher was a wonderful husband and father and looked forward to his time with his wife and two children on his return. He was killed while serving in Iraq at age 22. He leaves behind a wife and two young children.
