He served in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Korean Conflict. He was an electrician and a member of the IBEW Local 995 for over 65 years. He was a founding member of South Baton Rouge Church of Christ for 45+ years where he served as an Elder. He was preceded in death by his son, Leslie "Jerry" Carter (Nanette); grandson, Eythan Lackie; and siblings, Mary Matthews, Alex Dave Carter (Dot), Mattie Reed, Elbertine "Teenie" Wesberry, and Charlie Danny Carter. Surviving are his wife of 70 years, Pauline Hughes Carter; children, Gary "Gene" Carter (Cheryl), Paula Herman (Linn), James "Carroll" Carter (Sue), Joy Odem (Raymond), and Virginia Lea Baber (Glen); grandchildren, Micheal Carter (Lyndsi), Benjamin Lackie (Angela), Bradford Carter, Ryan Carter (Leslie), Annette Edwards (Rusty), Paige Goodman (Mike), Jon-Max Herman (Angelle), Lydia Pullman (Andrew), Clare Carter, Erika Odem, Carter Odem, Reilly Baber, Jude Baber, and Porter Baber; fourteen great grandchildren; and siblings, Orilla Lea Butler (Glen), Arilla Bea Weeks (Charles), and Malva Weaver (Shannon).
