It is with great sadness that we say goodbye to our father, Johnny. Our Dad passed on Saturday evening, April 9th. As his sons, it was comforting for us to spend Dad's last evening as a family- Dad, our Mom Anne, and us, his sons, JJ and Eric. It was nice to come full circle as a family with daughter-in-law, Lisa, a constant support to our Dad and all of us.
Our Dad was a complex man, at times distant emotionally, but we continually offered him our love as his sons over the years and each of us have our own special memories of our Dad that we will remember always.
Dad did have passion – With good humor over the years we would tease Dad that he "loved" his cars more than us! We laughed how he would meticulously wash, dry and polish every inch of his many cars over the years – his Model A, his 1941 Buick limo, the "Woody", the Anniversary edition Corvette, the black El Camino everyone wanted, and on and on, these were his "babies"! His love of cars extended to being a super fan of the Nascar races that he religiously watched! It was a perk of me having a good friend who happened to have a granddaughter who was married to the son of the owner of Nascar - I could get my Dad tickets to see the races in person! I think he enjoyed it, although he said he could see the races better on his TV than in person!
Dad was born in Santa Maria at Airport Hospital on May 13, 1938 to John and Lynetta Perry. He was raised in Oso Flaco until their big move as a family to the big city of Guadalupe! He attended local schools, graduating with the 1957 Class at Santa Maria High School. With friends, including Augie Losada, he formed the band "The Biscaynes", which performed at many local venues – The Vet's Building, The Rose Garden, etc. They recorded professionally and shared the stage at one point with The Beach Boys! Dad loved the tenor sax and was happy that we shared his love of the sax, although Guadalupe School music teacher, Mr. Pipes, was not able to make us as good as our Dad!
He married our mother, Anne, in 1958. They remained friends for the next 6 decades, sharing their two boys, John "JJ" born in 1959 and Eric, born in 1966. Dad and Mom purchased the infamous "Druid's" building at 959 Guadalupe St. from the owners of Diamond Auto Parts in 1966. Together they started J. Perry Auto Supply which later became the local Napa Auto Supply. The store became known more in later years as a museum of Guadalupe history and memorabilia than a parts store! Locals as well as tourists from all over the world signed the guest book and enjoyed Dad's treasures! The City of Guadalupe was #1 to Dad – whether serving as a member of the Lion's Club, The City Council, The Chamber of Commerce, artist for the Guadalupe Newspaper, Street Commissioner, or making sure the sidewalk and curb in front of his store was swept clean…many times a day! We shared Dad with the city, but it brought him great joy and purpose serving the town.
Dad leaves behind many loved ones – His two sons, JJ and Eric. Daughter-in-law, Lisa, Two granddaughters, Brianna (Matthew) Rodriguez and Marin (David) Piceno. Five great-grandchildren, Joaquin, Remington and Benicio Rodriguez and Niccolo and Xiomara Piceno. A sixth great-grandchild will arrive next month, perhaps on our Dad's birthday?! In addition, his sister, Evelyn Tallman, sister-in-law, Jenny Perry, and all his relatives in the Perry, Oliveira, Gaxiola, Rodriguez,Tallman families and Angela Perry. All that knew Dad know how much our stepmom, Margarita Perry meant to him during their marriage and a perk of their marriage is that we got the best stepbrother we could have asked for! Thank you "Johnny Boy", John Sabedra, Jr. for your friendship and understanding over the years! In his final chapter, Dad enjoyed life with his fiancée, Olga Bacolot, enjoying each other's company, as well as her families, and making Dad's final chapter happy.
A small memorial service will be held on Monday, April 25th, 2022 at 10:00 a.m. at the Guadalupe Cemetery, where Dad will be interred with his parents.
