Retired licensed aircraft mechanic Clifford Willits, 82, died March 3 at Our Lady of Compassion Care Center. Memorial services were conducted at the Trinity Presbyterian Church, 12310 Lorraine, with the Rev. George Gilchrist and the Rev. Alice Green officiating.

Born Dec. 9, 1907, in Kitchner, Ontario, Canada, Mr. Willits left home when he was 14 and traveled all over the United States. He worked in the timber industry, in a print shop in Detroit, and as a cowboy in the West. He was a gold miner in Nome in the 1930s and had a trap line in Talkeetna in 1940 before joining the Army Air Corps and serving in the South Pacific during World War II. He returned to Alaska after the war and worked for Old Star Airlines, which became PNA Airlines, from 1947 until 1951; for Cordova Airlines and later Interior Airways, all in Anchorage, until he retired in 1970. He fished commercially in Trading Bay in the early 1960s. He was also a private pilot. Mr. Willits enjoyed reading, hunting and food. He is survived by his wife, Ruth Willits of Anchorage; one daughter, Marjorie Dunaway of Dillingham; and one sister, Doris Barber of Stony Creek, Ontario, Canada. The family has suggested memorial contributions be directed to the Trinity Presbyterian Church, 12310 Lorraine, Anchorage, 99516. Burial will be in the spring. Service arrangements were by the Witzleben Family Funeral Homes and Crematory, Sixth Avenue Chapel.
