Emma Gladys Leggat 87 years old, a life long resident of Mt. Vernon, NY passed away Friday morning February 20th at home in Georgetown DE surrounded by family. Mrs. Leggat was born in Mandal, Norway June 17th, 1921. Daughter of the late Julies & Agnes Samuelsen. She graduated from Cliffside Park High School, NJ. In 1941 graduated from Norwegian Lutheran Hospital Nursing School Brooklyn, NY. Mrs. Leggat served in WWII-Ensign-Navy Nurse Corp USA in 1943 where she fell in love. Married on Oct. 30,1943 in Denville, NJ to the late Alexander W. Leggat former Fire Chief of Mt. Vernon. Gladys and Wally raised their family in the town they loved for over 50 years. She was preceded in death by her daughter Elaine Margaret Tober and son Alexander W. Leggat II. Mrs. Leggat was proud of her career as a Registered Nurse. She was honored by the Sons of Norway-Nor-Bu-Lodge as the oldest charter member. She enjoyed her time spent swimming and dining with friends at New York Athletic Club, Travers Island. Survived by brother Norman Samuelsen, brother in law Francis M. Tober, six grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and her new kitten Puss Puss. Friends may call for viewing at Pelham Funeral Home Friday February 27th 5:00-7:30 pm with a prayer service following. Burial Service begins from Pelham Funeral Home at 9:00am Saturday February 28th where she will be put to rest at Mt. Hope Cemetery, Hastings-on-Hudson, NY.
