Vivian was born on June 20, 1921, in Tulsa Oklahoma, to Bertie Belle (Sloan) Marshall and Benjamin Harrison Marshall. Her family…mother, 2 sisters and 1 brother, along with her step-father moved to Nebraska and then to California after her parents participated in a "land excursion" that showed what appeared to be an easy life in an area with nice weather and plenty of jobs. As it turned out, it was not at all an easy life. After her step-father left them, the family struggled to live in the area south of Red Bluff. Her brother worked on a farm and during the summer months, Vivian worked cutting fruit in local orchards, making about 3 cents for each fifty-pound box of fruit she cut. Her mother ironed, did housework, canned, and whatever she could to earn money. After high school, Vivian worked as a telephone operator for about five years until she met Richard Rouse, the love of her life. They were married on Oct. 16, 1942. Throughout his career as a USAF officer, they moved frequently, including a 3½ year stay in Bermuda, and finally retiring in Redding. They both enjoyed playing golf, travelling to Hawaii, and Vivian especially loved working as a primary school teacher's aide in the Enterprise School District where she was able to share her life-long love of reading with many children.
The family would like to thank the staff at Oakdale Heights for their loving care in the final years of her life.
