It is with much sadness we announce the passing, peacefully in her sleep, of Mary-Ann Swanson on 8th April 2022, at 1.10am after a short fight with cancer. She will be very much missed by family and friends alike.

Mary-Ann Swanson was born on 31st March 1951, in Greenville, Pennsylvania, USA to parents Robert and Marie Swanson. She is survived by her husband Ian, siblings Catherine and Christina, sister-in-law Dee, nieces Olivia, Christa and Jackie, nephew Shea ,all in the USA, by stepchildren Stephen, Rebecca and Christopher and grandchildren Amelie and Ollie all in Australia and sister-in-law Janice, brother-in-law Michael, niece Catherine and nephew Christopher all in the UK.

Mary-Ann was predeceased by her father Robert senior, mother Marie and brother Robert in the USA.

Mary-Ann was educated at Indiana University, Bloomington, USA where she completed a graduate degree in English and masters' degrees in Folklore Studies and Library Science.

Wishing to see the world Mary-Ann's employment took her across the world, initially as a university librarian, then after a course in teaching English as a foreign language in the UK, as a university teacher.

Her globetrotting took her from Indiana University, Dayton and Florida universities in the US, to universities in Muscat in Oman, Al Ain in the UAE, Tokaido in Japan, Muscat again, Perth in Western Australia, Guilin in China. She finished her teaching career as an English exam marker for Anglia Ruskin University and University of Cambridge in the UK. This spanned the period from the mid 70s to 2012.

Since residing in the UK from 2007, Mary-Ann has followed her passion and dedicated herself to causes aimed at helping save the planet and making the world a better place. She was a founding member of Transition Town Ely, Cambridgeshire and then a member of Transition Town Abergavenny, member of Plastic Free Abergavenny, established and ran Repair Café Abergavenny and was instrumental in bringing Benthyg (Welsh for lend) Library of Things to Abergavenny.

At Mary-Ann's request there is to be no funeral, just a simple cremation with no mourners. Instead there is to be a celebration of her life and achievements, to be held at the Abergavenny Community Centre, Park Street, Abergavenny on 18th May from 2-4pm. All are welcome and invited to say a few words about Mary-Ann if you wish.
