He was the son of Mildred (Sparling) and Robert Matthews. Jack cherished his youth growing up with his siblings in the area of Kingston known as Ponckhockie. He was a communicant of St. Mary's Church. At the age of 17 Jack volunteered for service in the Navy. He served on the destroyer USS Laffey during the Korean War. In 1958 he married the love of his life Jacqueline FitzGerald. Jack was employed by IBM, LabCorp as a courier and Ulster County Hall of Records. After his retirement at the age of 79, he continued to pursue his passion for local history. He was involved with many of the local museums and shared his historical knowledge of Kingston whenever possible. Jack was a member of the VFW, Laffey Association, Union Hose Fire Company, Exempt Fireman Association and the Volunteer Firemen's Museum. Jack was predeceased by his parents, his brothers; Robert, Richard and Ronald, his sisters Marie Schussler and Eileen Tierney. His beloved wife Jacqueline passed away in 2008.
