Barry Campbell, 75, of Wilmington, Ohio unexpectedly passed away March 28, 2022.
Mr. Campbell was born on April 7, 1946 in Covington, Kentucky to the late Fred and Lillian Campbell. He graduated from Dixie Heights High School in Fort Mitchell, Kentucky in 1964.
After high school, he attended Millikin University in Decatur, Illinois where he was introduced to his wife, Martha, by her brother Tom Jenkins. They were all music majors, and Barry graduated from Millikin in 1969. During college, he toured the Middle East with the Millikin University Jazz Band and with the Stan Kenton Jazz Band for a short period of time.
After graduation, he was hired at Clinton-Massie High School as a band director, and then started teaching at Blanchester High School in 1978. In 1982, he received his Master's Degree in Administration from Xavier University and became a principal and superintendent at various schools in southern Ohio before retiring in 1999. Throughout his career, he also taught a few music classes at Wilmington College.
Not only did Barry dedicate his life to education, but he also conducted and played music professionally. In his younger years, he was a member of The Wellingtons who played various local gigs and wedding receptions. In recent years, he also directed and performed several Jazz Band concerts at our park, The Murphy Theatre (one that featured Rosemary Clooney), and at Riverscape in Dayton.
He also conducted the Wilmington Community Band and directed the choir and bell choir at The First Christian Church in Wilmington for several years.
His most cherished times were those spent with his family and friends, which included working out at Planet Fitness and walking on the bike path, having coffee at McDonald's with friends, watching and discussing the Reds and Xavier basketball, dog sitting for his granddogs, taking his grandkids fishing and watching them play sports, and attending family gatherings and family vacations at the beach.
Barry is survived by his wife of 52 years, Martha; a daughter, Shari (Kyle) Murphy; a son Mike (Tanya) Campbell; a brother-in-law, Tom (Cyndy) Jenkins; and several cousins, Karen (Rick) Barnes of Myrtle Beach, S.C., Brenda Foltz of Covington, Ky., Tina (Mark) Knapp of Sparta, Ky., Cheryl (Joseph) Niehues of Taylor Mill, Ky., Debbie (Joe) Pantone of San Francisco, Ca., Denny (Laura) Piper of Covington, Ky., Pat Piper of Florida, Laura (Evan) Ragouzis of Cincinnati, Ohio, and Beverly (Glenn) Stewart of Covington, Ky.
Barry's pride and joy were his five grandchildren and four granddogs: Jack Murphy, Alex Campbell, Katie Murphy, Grace Campbell, Carson Campbell, and Sally, Ginger, Parker, and Lucy. The mere mention of any of these names would instantly bring a smile to his face.
In addition to his parents, Barry was preceded in death by his grandson, Campbell Alexander Murphy, in 2000.
A memorial service will be held at The First Christian Church Disciples of Christ in Wilmington, Ohio on Sunday, May 15 at 2 p.m.
Memorial gifts may be made to The Clinton County Humane Society, P.O. Box 1024, Wilmington, OH 45177 or online at clintoncohumanesociety.org or The First Christian Church Disciples of Christ, 120 Columbus St. Wilmington, OH 45177.
