Born 14 May 1765 Marlboro VT.
John Gates enlisted in the Continental Army on 16 May 1781, aged sixteen. He and his wife moved to St Albans, VT in 1800.

He enlisted for a three-year term in May 1781 as a Private in the Company of Captain Nehemiah Emerson in the 11th Massachusetts Regiment commanded by Colonel Benjamin Tupper
