Mr. Roy Houston Jones, 90, passed away at his home on Tuesday evening, April 12, 2022.
The funeral service for Mr. Jones will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, April 16 at Bethel United Methodist Church with Rev. Stephen Shytle and Rev. Allen Mears officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
A Guilford County native, Roy was one of two sons born on December 31, 1931, to Ernest Wayne Jones and Onie Dwiggins Jones. He was a member of Bethel United Methodist Church. Mr. Jones was a hard-working, family-loving man. Following his service to our country in the US Army he worked for Coca- Cola bottling Company, first as a route delivery driver, working his way up to be special events coordinator. He also retired from the Oak Ridge Fire Department where he worked his way up the ranks to eventually serve as chief for 14 years, with 50 years of dedicated service to the department. He then went to work for the Bank of Oak Ridge and worked 9 years as courier, eventually retiring at age 80. Time spent with family, especially camping trips, was his treasure on earth. In earlier years he enjoyed hunting.
On a cold wintry morning, December 20, 1952, he married Nelta Nelson and they recently celebrated 69 years together. In addition to his parents, he was preceded by his brother Willard Wayne "W.W." Jones.
Surviving are his wife, Nelta N. Jones of the home; children Douglas Roy Jones, Sr. and his wife, Pamela, Robin Jones Conaway, and Ricky Wayne Jones, Sr. all of Oak Ridge; 5 grandchildren Douglas Jones, Jr and his wife, Rebecca, Laura Lee Jones, Jeff Conaway and his wife, Crystal, Ricky Wayne Jones, Jr., Colby Zane Jones; 11 great grandchildren Tate Lawson, Matthew Jones, William Jones, Ian Jones, Anna Jones, Daniel Jones, Caleb Mills, Elijah Mills, Ashlyn Jones, Blakely Lynn Jones, and Addalynn Jones.
The family will receive friends Friday evening from 6 until 8 p.m. at Forbis & Dick – Stokesdale.
