Richard C. Van Dusen, an Under Secretary of Housing and Urban Development in the Nixon Administration, died Saturday at the Harley Street Clinic in London. He was 65 years old and lived in Bingham Farms, Mich.
Mr. Van Dusen, who was vacationing in England, died while undergoing surgery for a heart transplant, said his daughter Amanda.
A 1949 graduate of Harvard University Law School, Mr. Van Dusen was chairman of the Detroit law firm of Dickinson, Wright, Moon, Van Dusen & Freeman and vice chairman of the Automobile Association of America.
In the mid-1950's he served in the Michigan House of Representatives and later was legal adviser to Gov. George W. Romney. He played a central role in Mr. Romney's unsuccessful quest for the Republican nomination for the Presidency in 1968.
He became an H.U.D. under secretary in 1969 and left the agency in 1972.
He is survived by his wife, Barbara; three daughters, Amanda of Pleasant Ridge, Mich., Lisa of Palo Alto, Calif., and Katherine of Monte Verde, Costa Rica; his mother, Helen; five brothers, two sisters, and five grandchildren.
