Obituary
David Braden Patton, age 84, of Columbus, Ohio, died March 29, 2022, at Wesley Glen Retirement Community following a prolonged struggle with dementia. He was born on January 11, 1938, in Utica, New York, the son of the late Francis Lester Patton and Elizabeth Prime Keeler. On December 18, 1965, he married Margaret Sprehe in Columbus, and they shared 46 years of marriage until her death in 2011. Survivors include sons Steve and Eric, daughter-in-law Rebecca, grandchildren Zachary, Nicholas, Andrew, Oz and Amalia, and brothers Wendell and Robert.

Dave was Associate Professor Emeritus at the Ohio State University, where he spent his long career, teaching at the Mansfield, Newark, and main campuses, and working for the Labor Education and Research Service (LERS), and OSU Extension. He was active in the American Association of University Professors and in 1998 was awarded the Al Sumberg Award for furthering the interests of higher education. A longtime volunteer with the League of Women Voters of Metropolitan Columbus, he was their first male president, from 2015-2016. He was the co-founder of the Citizens for Public Discussion. He also served on the Steering Committee of the Franklin County Consortium for Good Government and was Executive Director of the Council for Public Deliberation.

A lover of opera and all classical music, gardening, berries, international and domestic travel, hockey and football, and fostering discussion on public issues, Dave will also be remembered for his devotion to his grandchildren and his wry and dry sense of humor.

Donations in his name can be made to the League of Women Voters of Metropolitan Columbus. Services will be announced at a later date.
