Son of Joseph A. and Sarah E. (Ryfles) Maloney, father from New Brunswick and mother from Robbinston Maine. His parents married Aug 5, 1867 in Calais. (She remarried in 1871 to Jackson A. Calkins.) Joseph was age 2 in the 1870 census in Robbinston with his mother Sarah and his maternal grandparents Charles and Sarah Ryfles/Rifles.

He married Gertrude May Wilson, daughter of George T. and Phoebe Anna (Robinson) of Calais on Nov 16, 1904 in Robbinston Maine. They had at one child, Charlotte born July 13, 1908.

In 1920 he was 50 and a polisher at the quarry; wife Gertrude was 39 and Charlotte was 11. They resided in Calais.
