David T Gee enlisted in the Civil War on October 7, 1862, and served as a Private in H Company 22nd Kentucky Volunteer Infantry. He transferred to C Company 7th Kentucky Veteran Volunteer Infantry and was discharged in 1865. Note: His brother, Rev Robert Gee (1840-1924), also served in H Co 22nd Ky Vol Inf.

David married Louisa James, daughter of Andrew Jackson James and Julia Ann Williams, on November 30th, 1865, in Carter County, Kentucky. David's maternal grandfather, John William James, Jr, and Louisa's maternal grandfather, George Washington James, were brothers.
