Film Industry Pioneer. He would became a director, studio executive, producer and credited for being a co-founder in 1912 of what would become Universal Studios. Born in New York City, New York, Baumann entered the film industry in the late 1900s by becoming a partner with Crescent Film Company in 1908. He frequently collaborated with fellow executive-producer Adam Kessel at various film studios. Baumann co-founded the New York Motion Picture Company, Bison Film Company and Kay-Bee Pictures with Kessel in 1909. In 1910, Baumann, Mark M. Dintenfass & Carl Laemmle, they created the Motion Pictures Sales and Distributing Company. Kessel and Baumann are the co-founders and original financial backers for the Mack Sennett-owned Keystone Film Company upon its founding in 1912. With Laemmle, Kessel, Dintenfass, David Horsley, Jules Brulatour and a group of fellow film executives, he co-founded Universal Pictures in 1912. Baumann was the first Universal president. After leaving Universal, Baumann and Kessel formed the film distribution firm, Mutual Film Corporation which merged with the Triangle Film Corporation. The Kessel-Baumann Picture Corporation would see the duo continue work throughout the 1920s. Jillian Ada Kelly, his great granddaughter, published his biography The Movie Maker: Charles O. Baumann: Silent Era Film Pioneer Who Discovered Chaplin, Sennett, Ince, and Many More" in 2015.
