Johnston wed in 1834, but his first wife died in 1850. He had been farming in Coles County, Illinois, with his stepfather (Lincoln's father, Thomas). Johnston married t 15-year old Nancy Jane Williams in March of 1851.
Months later, Lincoln became aware that Johnston planned to move. Lincoln advised Johnston to stay in Coles County and work the farm that Thomas Lincoln had left behind. Lincoln wasn't a wealthy man, but he was more prosperous than Johnston, who began to ask Lincoln for financial help. Lincoln took a dim view of his step-brother's requests. In 1851 he wrote to Johnston, "You are destitute because you have idled away all your time… Go to work is the only cure for your case."
