DR. SAMUEL R. ORR
Dr. Samuel R. Orr, 87, medical doctor and surgeon, died peacefully on Thursday morning, December 27, 2007 at the Jennings-McCall II Assisted Living Center in Forest Grove.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Sunday, January 13, 2007 at 2:00 PM at the Jennings-McCall II Assisted Living Center, 2221 Oak Street in Forest Grove. Interment will be held on Saturday, January 12, 2007 at l:00 PM at the Belcrest Memorial Park in Salem.
DR. SAMUEL ROBERT ORR was born July 25, 1920 in Portland, Oregon, the son of recent immigrants from Northern Ireland, Robert Orr and Elizabeth (Gordon) Orr. Upon graduation from Jefferson High School in 1938, he went to work for Chevron Oil Company to earn money for a college education. Several years later he enrolled for a pre-medicine degree at Oregon State University, where he also joined the Navy ROTC program and was a member of Kappa Sigma Fraternity.
He graduated for OSU in 1944 and then enrolled at Oregon Health Science University to continue his medical studies. While at OHSU, he met his future wife, Florence Lewis, whom he married on October 5, 1947 at the Methodist Church in Salem, Oregon. The first of his five children arrived in July of l948. By then he was working on his Internship at Good Samaritan Hospital in Portland. In 1950 he was called for duty during the Korean War and the couple moved to Vista, California, while he worked as a doctor for the US Navy. He was released from active duty as a full Lieutenant at the end of the war, and they returned to Portland where he resumed working at Good Samaritan Hospital. In 1953, the couple responded to an opening for a doctor in Prineville, Oregon, and they moved there immediately with their first two sons. During the next few years, three more children were added to the family.
During the next 22 years that he resided in Prineville, he worked from his private practice as a physician and surgeon. He was a black bag doctor with patients as far away as John Day, Paulina, Madras, and Shaniko. Delivering babies was a major part of his work, but it was well known that he also delivered a number of calves and colts on some of the remote ranches of Central Oregon. He was an avid hunter and fisherman, but he also enjoyed his membership at the Prineville Golf & Country Club. He was a member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church, was active with the Come Doubles dance group, and was a member of the Prineville Elks Club. His other passion was traveling which he and his wife did whenever his work allowed.
In 1975, he was again called to active military duty, promoted to Colonel, but this time was a doctor with the U.S. Air Force. The couple closed their family practice office, and moved to Vandenburg Air Force Base in Lompoc, California, where they resided for the next 23 years. They joined the Vandenburg Village Golf Club, the Vandenburg AFB Officer's Club and continued playing bridge with friends and neighbors. They also continued to travel and especially enjoyed visiting their children whether in Alaska, Germany, Oregon, or Rhode Island.
In 1998, the couple moved back to Oregon and found a house on a golf course in Tigard as a place to call home. They continued to travel, enjoyed playing golf and enjoyed seeing their children and grandchildren which were beginning to congregate in the Portland area. Failing health finally caught up with them, however, and they moved to Jennings-McCall II Assisted Living Center in Forest Grove, at the start of 2005.
Sam was preceded in death by his wife of 59 years, Florence; his parents and all of his siblings.
He is survived by his children, Bob, Dave, Mary (Farrar), Jerry and Rick; eleven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
The family suggests that in lieu of flowers or other tributes, contributions be made to Hospice of Washington County, 900 SE Oak Street, #202, Hillsboro, Oregon 97123 or to the Oregon Health Sciences University, 3181 SW Sam Jackson Park Road, Portland, Oregon 97239.
