Helen was born in Portage in Columbia County, Wisconsin. Her parents had previously lived there, but had moved to Winona, Minnesota by 1870. However, the family appears to have gone back and forth a lot. In 1870, her mother and 2 children appeared in 2 different censuses--one with her mother's parents in Portage, and the other with her mother and father in Winona, Minnesota. So the mother and two children must have been visiting the grandparents in Portage and got picked up on that census as well. Perhaps they had also gone back to Portage when Helen was born.

Helen married Laurence/Lawrence Merrrill in Minnesota in 1907. (Her obituary incorrectly says 1912.) They had two daughters, one of whom, Jane, died as an infant in 1911. The family lived in Winona and Minneapolis, then moved to Omaha before 1920 and to Florida later in the 1920s. Helen and Laurence were divorced sometime before 1930. He remarried at least once and is presumed to have died in Florida, maybe in 1949, but maybe later--I have found no specific records.

About 1928, Helen married Thomas E. Bowlby. They were living in Cleveland in 1930, but moved back to Florida, where he died in 1936. In 1937 in Florida, Helen remarried to Joseph Allen; they were soon divorced (he died in 1949). In 1941 she married Preston Elliott (her obituary incorrectly calls him Robert). He died in Key West in 1960, where Helen also died in 1961. Sadly, her obituary says she did not know the location of her daughter, Nancy Jeanne (Merrill) Bigelow, who died in 1981. Helen was sent back to Winona, Minnesota for burial with her parents.
