RAE LOUISE HAYWARD was born in New Orleans, LA to Ralph and Joyce Hayward.

A graduate of Dorsey High School in Los Angeles in 1967, Rae attended Pepperdine University for three years, and graduated Valley State Northridge (CA State University at Northridge) in 1971.

Immediately after graduation, Rae began working for Pacific Telephone, which later evolved into AT&T resulting in a relocation to the Francisco Bay area.

Rae's travels to West Africa opened up a new world in 1975 and its colors, textiles, way of life was reflected in the art she later created.

Co-founder in 1997 of The Art of Living Black, (TAOLB) a Bay Area black art exhibition sponsored by the Richmond Art Center with artist Jan Hart-Schuyers. Rae has been very involved with Bay area artists ever since.

Marrying her soul mate, Steven Hopkins enriched her life even more.

Her joys in life included spending time with her family. She cherished the time spent with her beloved nephews and nieces Amadou, Malick, Jo-Issa, Lamine and Elize as they were growing up. Rae was so proud of all of them as they grew into beautiful young adults. She also loved talking to her only sister no matter what distance they lived from one another. She lived by the family motto of three generations "Give to the world the best that you have and the best will come back to you".

Her faith in Christ helped support and comfort her throughout her illness.

Rae left behind her loving husband Steven Hopkins, her father and mother Ralph and Joyce Hayward, her sister Delyna Hayward Diop, her nephews and nieces Amadou (godson), Malick, Jo-Issa, Lamine and Elize Diop, her sisters-in-law Melba Lazenby, Shirley Davis, and Blanche Phillips, brother-in-laws Roger Ferrow and Truman Hopkins, a number of other in-laws, uncles and a host of cousins, and friends.

May her loving legacy live on.
