Mr. Thomas reached the rank of Chief Petty Officer E-7 in the United States Navy (Retired). Rick was stationed in the U.S. ports of Charleston, South Carolina and Norfolk, Virginia. He traveled the world serving on the troop transport ships; USS Mount Baker, USS El Paso and USS Charleston. He was on recruiting duty (1977-1981) in Adrian, Michigan and served with Shore Intermediate Maintenance Activity (SIMA) from 1988 to 1992. During his 20-years of service to the United States, Rick received a number of honors and medals of accommodations.
After retirement Rick enjoyed spending time with family, woodworking, hunting and gardening. He was a member of Holton Evangelical Lutheran Church, Hesperia American Legion and a member of the Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa-Chippewa Indians Association.
Surviving are his wife Jenise of Hesperia; daughter Jennifer L. Thomas and son James R. Thomas both of Hesperia; grandsons, Tommy (Katelynn) Tinkham of Grand Haven and Blake Tinkham of Hesperia; great grandson Waylon Tinkham; step-granddaughter, Randi Bevins and great granddaughters, Kenleigh and Ainsleigh Moorman of Hesperia; his mother, Shirley Thomas of Hesperia; brothers; Michael Thomas of Winter Haven Florida and Steve Thomas of Muskegon; sisters Judy (Tom) O'Neill of Muskegon, Cathy (Kirk) Griffes of Holland, Linda (Don) Penland of Brohman, Lori (Jeff) Rumsey of Hesperia, Lisa Thomas of Hesperia and favorite aunt Carol Thomas of Hesperia. Rick was preceded in death by his father George Thomas; and brothers, Kenneth Thomas and Mark Thomas.
A graveside service with full military rights will be held at 1:00 P.M. on Saturday, April 23, 2022 at East Hesperia Cemetery. Following the service, a luncheon will be held at the Hesperia American Legion from 2:00 PM until 6:00 PM.
