John Harvey Green, PhD, 82, was born on July 2, 1939, in Milwaukee, WI, and spent most of his childhood in Louisville, KY. John passed away on Sunday, April 3, 2022, surrounded by his family. He was a resident of Thibodaux, LA.

He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Allene Anderson Green of Knoxville, TN; son, John William Green and wife, Annmarie Banchy of Wellington, FL; daughter, Karen M. Green Smith and husband, Guy M. Smith of New Orleans, LA; five wonderful grandchildren he was blessed with, Daniel Green of Seattle, WA, and Michelle Green of FL, Winston and Kate Smith of New Orleans, LA, and Matthew Daniel Hadorn of Rochester NY. John is also survived by a younger brother, William "Bill" Richard Green and wife, Cynthia "Cindy" J. Heenan Green of Louisville, KY.

John was preceded in death by his parents, Katharine G. Sandry Green and Harvey Lye Green of Louisville, KY and one older brother, James "Jim" B. Green of Houston, TX.

John was a beloved Husband, Father, Grandfather ("Pops/Gramps"), educator, mentor and cherished friend to many. He is a polio and iron lung survivor since the tender age of 15. With the encouragement of family, friends and the biology faculty at University of Louisville, he beat all odds and graduated with a B.S. degree in Biology in June of 1962. The summer of 1962 he attended the prestigious Woods Hole Marine Oceanographic Institute in MA. The fall of 1962, he attended the University of Tennessee where he met his beloved wife. There he majored in Marine Botany and Ecology and was awarded a Master of Science degree in the Spring of 1964.

John's first teaching position was Assistant Professor of Biology at Clinch Valley College of the University of VA in 1964. He then returned to University of TN and was awarded a PhD degree in Botany and Ecology in the Fall of 1969 after completion of a Ford Foundation Fellowship conducting research in the Great Smoky Mountains and acting as a teaching assistant in botany.

The summer of 1969 John and Allene moved to Thibodaux, LA, where John accepted a teaching position in the biology department at Nicholls State University (NSU). His career spanned 36 years at NSU, where he served as professor, was named Department Head of Biological Sciences in 1973, served as director of Nicholls State University Marine Center, served as assistant to the dean of Life Sciences and Technology for 18 years, was appointed acting dean of the newly created College of Arts and Sciences in the Fall of 1998, was awarded the Marie Fletcher Distinguished Service Award in 1999 by the NSU Alumni Federation, and had the academic rank of Professor Emeritus at retirement in 2005.

Other professional accolades include visiting professor of engineering at LSU research project from 1973-76, marine botanist principal investigator for the LOOP (Louisiana Offshore Oil Platform) study and strategic oil reserve project, project director for the LOOP Salt Dome storage program, helped establish the LUMCON Research Center, and served as President of LUMCON for 1 year. In the 1980s and 90s, John was active in helping the 504-legislation become law to make education obtainable to all.

John always enjoyed teaching, technology, classical music, art, fine foods, NASCAR racing, nature photography, photo microscopy, and spending time with family and close friends.

Special thanks to John's caregivers, Kevin Ward and Nathaniel Ward and the medical professionals who cared for him throughout the years.

A memorial visitation will be held in his honor on Monday, April 11, 2022 at St. Joseph Co-Cathedral, Thibodaux, LA, from 8:00 AM until the Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 AM. Burial will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery, Thibodaux, LA.
