Ira Exie John Brittain was born to Milton Harvey Brittain and wife, Mary Ann Meredith Brittain on May 16, 1901 at Kirbyville, Mo. The sixth child in a family of seven children. He departed this life on June 22, 1973 at the age of 72 years, and 1 month and 6 days.
In August 1925 beside the old St. James school house, arbor he was converted to the Lord Jesus Christ at an old fashioned altar of repentance. A few days later he was baptized by Rev. Claytie Crawford in White River at Blackwells Ferry, which is now a part of Bull Shoals Lake. Later on he joined the membership of the St. James G. B. Church. He remained faithful to the Lord and to his Church, ever willing to serve whenever he was needed.
On March 7, 1926 he was married to Rev. Almeda Edwards at the home of her parents, Josiah and Mary Gloyd Edwards of Powersite, Mo., by Rev B.H. Hensley. To this union were born two daughters, Mildred Marie and Marymae Racine. He will be remebered as a most loving husband and a patient and gentle father. He was always helping Rev. Briitain in her ministry by backing her in her decisions; by keeping transportation in readiness; caring for the children when she was in the pulpit, and tirelessly supporting her in all her efforts to serve the Lord. He was a helpful, kind, dependable and trusting friend to all who knew him, many times neglecting self to lend a helping hand to others. His last conversation was, "I want you to know I'm ready, and tell the rest of them to get ready and meet me."
He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, Elta and Nancy and one brother Harvey.
He is survived by his wife of the home, Rev. Almeda Brittain, Powersite, Mo., two daughters, Mildred Marie(Mrs. Walter Lasick) of Glendale, Maryland; Marymae Racine(Mrs. Charles E. Baker) of Pittsburgh, Pennslyvania; four granddaughters, two grandsons, four great-grandsons, three brothers, Milton Price of Hollister., Dewey of Kirbyville, Mo., and Hurley of Kirbyville, Mo.
On Sunday, June 24, 1973 at 3:00 p.m. his funeral was held in St. James General Baptist Church by Rev. Cecil J. Robertson, Elmer Davis, Adah Maggard, Daisy Manes, and Rev. Glesco Roberts who read Psalm 23 and gave final talk and led in prayer at the open grave. He was buried just south of West Gate in Edwards Cemetery near Powersite, Mo. in Taney County.Though he is sadly missed, we realize our loss is Heaven's gain. May we all be ready to meet him there for all eternity.
