James proudly served as a U.S. Navy corpsman from 1963 to 1967. He saw active combat in Vietnam while attached to the Marine Corps First and Third Reconnaissance Battalions. James was awarded a bronze star medal with combat distinguishing service for heroically attending to eight wounded in battle while under heavy enemy fire. James and his brothers from Alpha Deuce forged unbreakable bonds through their diligent service and sacrifice for their country and for one another.

After his military service, James settled in San Diego, California and began a career in the medical field. He worked as a respiratory therapist before transitioning to medical sales. While in California, James met his lifelong love, Mary Margaret "Peggy" Bastine. They married and built a loving home together in Schenectady, New York. Peggy went home to be with the Lord in 2014. James loved listening to music, playing guitar, and photography. He was mischievous and had an absurd sense of humor that included making up nicknames for everyone he loved. James' children lovingly nicknamed him "Phil". He was a cheese-loving, coffee drinking, TV watching night owl. James spent his retirement years in the company of his loving wife, children, grandchildren, and his dog Betty.

James had a sweet spirit, a kind heart, and he lived his life with devotion to the service of others. He was a beloved father, grandfather, and brother who shall be immensely missed.
