Sylvia Casteen Padgett, 79, of Burgaw, a kind and joyful soul, a gracious and loving lady was called to her heavenly home by the Lord on Saturday, April 2, 2022 at Lower Cape Fear LifeCare in Wilmington where Sylvia was surrounded with love and her family.

She was born April 16, 1942 in Burgaw, the daughter of the James Uriah Casteen and Ada Wells Casteen Meeks. In addition to her parents Sylvia was preceded in death by her husband, Vernie Adams in 1965 and husband, Jack Padgett in 1989.

Sylvia is survived by her daughter, Sabrina Hart and husband, Ron; son, Bryan Padgett; granddaughter, Jade Padgett; brothers, James "Jimmy" U. Casteen, Jr., Pearlie W. Casteen (Nadine), Linwood A. Casteen, and Ronnie Casteen (Pat); many aunts, nieces, nephews and extended family members. Sylvia was blessed with a very close knit and loving, caring family. Her brothers were always feisty and protective when it came to sister, Sylvia.

She began attending Herring's Chapel when she was around seven or eight years old and continued to have strong ties to the church all of her life. She was the treasurer of her church for many, many years.

As many of you know, Sylvia was an incredibly strong, brave, courageous lady. Widowed at 22 from her first husband, raised Sabrina as a single parent and attended Miller-Motte College and obtained an associate degree in accounting at the age of 28. Later, Sylvia married Jack and together they had their son, Bryan. Again, Sylvia was widowed at 47. A testament to her faith, Sabrina shared upon arriving home in the wee hours of the morning after Jack passed, she embraced her Mom and whispered I cannot believe you have lost two husbands and Sylvia whispered back "just remember God will not give us anything we cannot handle - He will sustain us". Sylvia's greatest career achievement was her family – being the BEST wife, mother, daughter, grandmother, sister anyone could ask for. She raised two such accomplished and loving kids, Bryan hails from Arizona and New York as a Construction Manager with Power Engineering, Inc, Jade is a junior at NC State - go Wolfpack! Sabrina has spent her career in the insurance industry.

She supported and loved her kids unconditionally - attended every sporting event, raised them in the church, set a standard of excellence. She was a basketball player herself and valedictorian of her class at Long Creek. And voted best legs - a story she always loved to tell. And she was a member of the Elvis Presley fan club! One of Bryan's friends shared Ms. Sylvia was everybody's Mom. Her home was always open and the home of all.

Sylvia was a card player, bowler, loved the beach and being on the water. In her younger days, Wrightsville Beach and the Lumina. And, later with her family, weekends were spent on the NE Cape Fear River boating and waterskiing - in fact Jack was quite the skier even skiing barefoot and Sylvia was his number 1 captain. She enjoyed traveling with her family - business trips with Sabrina including parasailing in Biloxi and NYC with Jade and Bryan.

What a glorious, full and wonderful life Sylvia lived.

The family will receive friends 5 to 7:00 p.m. Monday, April 4, 2022 at Quinn McGowen Funeral Home Burgaw Chapel.

Graveside funeral service will be 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, April 5, 2022 at Herrings Chapel United Methodist Church Cemetery with the Rev. William Hill Pearsall conducting the service.
