His hobby was attending Car Shows where he won several awards for displaying his 1953 Ford Crestline Victoria and 1955 Ford Fairlane. John retired as a Supervisor of Housekeeping at UNC-Asheville after 18 years of service.
He was preceded in death by his brothers, Tommy (Barbara) and Robert (Nina); grandmother, Lela Mae Johnson; grandfather, John Johnson.
He leaves to cherish his fond memories, his wife of over 60 years, Bessie Smith; son, Michael Lewis (Rita) of Winston-Salem, NC; daughter, Sharon Belton (Walter) of Spartanburg, SC; son, John L. Lewis of Spartanburg, SC; grandchildren, Shanice, Taurean, D. J., Moesha, NeeNee (MeeMee), Josiah; great-granddaughter, ADream; sisters, Anna Friday of Sacramento, California and Lula Mae Gilchrist of Washington, DC; brother, Chester Lewis of Atlanta, Georgia; a host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives he loved dearly.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 3:00 pm Saturday, April 2, 2022 in the chapel of Ray Funeral & Cremation Service.
