Donald Charles Whitney
September 21, 1934 ~ March 25, 2022 (age 87)

Donald Charles Whitney, age 87, passed away peacefully on March 25, 2022, surrounded by his family at Season's Hospice.

Don was born in Flushing, NY to the late Jack & Dorothy Whitney. He graduated from Chester High School in 1953 and Pennsylvania Military College in 1959. Don proudly served in the U.S. Army as an Intelligence Research Officer. Following his time in the Army, he spent his career in banking and finance. He retired from American Express Centurion Bank in 1993.

Don was a kind and caring person. He liked to make people laugh with his quick-witted humor. Over his lifetime he enjoyed many hobbies including his love for photography, which he shared with his son, Chris. He spent many family gatherings trying to get his children to give him the perfect pose for a family picture. He enjoyed history and spent six years working at the Delaware Historical Society. He read many books about history and spent countless hours researching the genealogy of his family. Don had a deep love for all animals and treated any that he met as if they were his own.

Don loved his children and they knew they could always count on Dad. He celebrated their triumphs and stood by them when they faced difficult circumstances. He was most happy when he spent time with his family and was often heard telling people that his children and grandchildren were the light of his life.

Don was preceded in death by his spouse, Florence Whitney, and his grandchildren, Mark Wibbens and Abigail Appleby.

He will be deeply missed by his children, Chris (Linda) Whitney of San Diego, CA; Ron Whitney of Dover, DE; Stephanie Whitney of Carneys Point, NJ; Amy Kiefer (Tim) of Wilmington, DE and Jenna (Dave) Appleby of Elkton, MD; his grandchildren, Brandon, Hunter, Cameron, Nathan, Devyn & Brodie; and great-granddaughter, Ashlynn.

Donations can be made in Don's honor to an animal shelter of your choice or to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (to honor his grandson Mark), www.lls.org, PO Box 22324, New York, NY 10087.

The burial service for Don will be private at the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Bear, DE.
