SULPHUR -- Services for Vernon Wayne Baker, 83, will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at First Baptist Church with the Revs. Eddie Malphrus and Chris Snowden officiating. Interment will follow at Wolf Cemetery in Wolf under the direction of Clagg Funeral Home.

Baker was born Sept. 15, 1915, in Oklahoma City, to A.J. and Irene Vanosdol Baker. He died July 5, 1999, in Sulphur.

Reared in Oklahoma City, he moved to Byng in 1937, to Colorado in 1952, and returned to Oklahoma in 1968 to work for the state correctional system. He was a veteran of World War II, a retired rancher and member of First Baptist Church. He married Chineenah Jo York July 24, 1942, in Oklahoma City, and had lived in Sulphur since 1988.

Survivors include his wife, of the home; two sons, Dan, Sulphur, and Jeffrey, Greenbrier, Ark.; two sisters, Wilma Myers, Sulphur, and Neoma Jones, Sulphur; five grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Bearers will be Major Clagg, Paul Thompson, Charles Simpson, Frank, Don and Joe Ramer. Honorary bearers are Leonard Snowden, Rick Milway, Kenneth Winters, Randy and Rick Jump.
