Clifton Leonard Ross, 87, of Brookings, Oregon died Dec. 6, 2007, at a local residential care facility, of natural causes.

He was born July 26, 1920, in Kanorado, Kan., to Delbert and Clara Ross.

He spent his childhood there and graduated from Kanorado High School in 1938.

He served in the U.S. Army from 1941 to 1945, serving overseas with the 99th Division as a medic during World War II.

Mr. Ross earned a bachelor's and a master's degree in teaching and chemistry at University of Colorado at Denver.

For much of his life, he was a teacher. He spent 22 years teaching in the prison system of California. He was especially proud of his work with the California Youth Authority, where he spent many years teaching an illiteracy program after his retirement.

In the late 1950s he married Lois Spaeth Ross, and together they had three daughters. The couple divorced in the 1970s.

He married Therona "Betty" Bringle in 1985.

Mr. Ross was an active community member. He was a staunch Republican and enjoyed politics. For many years he served as the Republican Central Commission chairman. He also served as the chaplain for the Veterans of Foreign Wars and was an active member of First Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife Betty of Brookings; daughters Linda Ross of Sacramento, Calif., Nancy Lykkehoy of Plymouth, Minn., Nadine Aguilera of Fredericksburg, Va. Also surviving are three grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents.
